Tips for a great counteroffer
Found a gig but think the hourly rate is too low? You’re free to negotiate—that’s the beauty of freelancing. No one decides your rate but you! But does a counteroffer actually work? How can you secure the gig while you raise your rate? What can you do to improve your chances? Read below for all the tips to make the perfect counteroffer.
TIME YOUR COUNTEROFFER RIGHT
One of the best tips for counteroffering is to choose your moment wisely. If a gig already has fifty responses, counteroffering makes little sense. But if the gig is less popular or requires someone to be on-site within two hours, you have a much better chance. The client needs someone, often urgently, even if it means paying more. Keep an eye on these opportunities and play around with your hourly rate accordingly.
Be realistic
You can raise your hourly rate, but you should also stay realistic. A counteroffer of £30 on top of the hourly rate is anything but that, 5-10% extra is more reasonable.
Add a motivation
The client ultimately decides who gets the gig. A counteroffer without explanation won’t get you very far. Explain why you’ve raised your rate. Don’t be modest and don’t focus solely on the rate; emphasise the value you bring.
Put yourself in the client’s shoes. What specific problems can you solve? How can your skills make their project more successful? Are you the best at carrying a tray? Are you a perfectionist in everything you do? Are you a superstar in logistics? Let the client know.
Showcase your experience
Do you see an open gig from a client you know inside out? One that you could practically do in your sleep? That’s a win-win for both of you – you get to work with a favourite client, and they save time on onboarding.
Keep in mind that clients can’t remember every freelancer’s name and face. Don’t hold it against them. Make sure to show who you are, highlight that you’ve successfully completed previous gigs, and demonstrate your experience. If the client is aware of your capabilities, they’re much more likely to accept your counteroffer. If they don’t, you can still negotiate further.
DISCUSS YOUR HOURLY RATE
Some freelancers find it nerve-wracking, but having a conversation face-to-face works far better than suddenly dropping a counteroffer in the app. A direct discussion gives you plenty of space to explain your reasoning.
Once you’ve had a good conversation, you can confidently follow up with your proposal through the app later. If the client says they can’t agree, use the opportunity to ask for feedback or find out when they might be open to reconsider your suggestion.
You might not always get what you want, but it’s worth asking
It’s true: not every client will accept a higher rate. But remember, you do have the option to negotiate. With these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to make your case. The key is to clearly and confidently explain why you’re increasing your rate or making a counteroffer.
You’ve got nothing to lose and everything to gain. Good luck!
