Martine (28) was still working in regular employment four years ago when an acquaintance asked her to spend a day taking Polaroid photos at a company event. What started as a spontaneous gig grew into a full-time freelance career spanning 4 years with more than 150 completed assignments.
MARTINE DISCOVERS FREELANCING BY ACCIDENT AND NEVER WANTS TO GO BACK: “I NEVER EXPECTED THIS WOULD BECOME MY LIFE”
An unexpected start
Martine had never planned to become a freelancer. “An acquaintance asked if I wanted to spend a day taking Polaroid photos at a company event. I had no idea what to expect, but it didn’t feel like work at all. I had so much fun! A colleague there told me about YoungOnes. That same evening I signed up, and I never stopped.”
Zoo photographer and working at Formula 1
Her first official gig as a freelancer? Taking photos of visitors at a zoo. “I had no experience as a photographer, but that wasn’t necessary either. I found it incredibly exciting, but once I started, everything just flowed naturally. It felt like the perfect opportunity, because I’d always been interested in photography. I ended up doing that gig many more times after that.”
In four years, Martine has done the most diverse range of gigs, including working at Formula 1. “I got to hand out magazines to visitors. The energy, the sound of the racing cars and the whole atmosphere… it felt like I was part of the spectacle myself.”
But which gig was truly unforgettable? “I got to take photos of well-known Dutch celebrities and influencers at a restaurant. The atmosphere was fantastic, it didn’t feel like work at all. And as the cherry on top, I was allowed to join the team for dinner afterwards. That was really a brilliant day!”
Breaking down on the roadside
Not every gig goes smoothly. “I once had a promotional gig where I was driving around with another freelancer in a small promotional car. It was great fun: music on, making people happy. Until the engine suddenly stopped and we were stranded on the roadside. The little car even started smoking. Eventually, passersby had to help push our car to the side. Work day over, but what a story!”

Freedom and growth
What makes freelancing so special for Martine? “The freedom. I decide for myself where and when I work, and every day is different. In regular employment I had to request holidays a year in advance, now I book a last-minute ticket if I feel like it.”
Still, finding the right balance took some time initially. “I said ‘yes’ to everything and worked six days a week. Great fun, but also exhausting. Now I’ve learned to maintain my boundaries and find a healthy balance.”
Travel and retreats
Freelancing has completely changed Martine’s perspective on work. “I always thought you had to choose one permanent job for the rest of your life. Now I see how many possibilities there are.”
Her ultimate dream? “My own company where I give other freelancers the chance to work with me. I want to organise retreats combining yoga, mindfulness and travel with work. Freelancing now gives me the time and freedom to build that dream step by step.”
“My advice for those who are hesitating? Just give it a try! You can even keep your current job. Try a few gigs, see if it’s something for you and who knows, you might really enjoy it!”
